A café by day, a restaurant and wine bar by night — on the corner locals have been walking past for years.

Black Drop sits at 615 Balcombe Road, under the clock in the middle of Black Rock. It opens early for coffee and stays on through the day — and from Thursday to Saturday the lights stay on into the evening for dinner and wine.
The kitchen runs the same way morning and night: proper produce, cooked simply. Eggs and sourdough in the morning. Black Angus off the grill and a pan of seafood paella in the evening, with a short, deliberate wine list beside them.
Most of the room is regulars. That is the point — a neighbourhood place first, built to keep you a while.
A pan of paella and a glass of wine, $35 — Thursdays from 5pm.
